Julian Escobar is a versatile Colombian drummer and composer. He is currently living in Laak The Hague, where he is pursuing a bachelor in Jazz drums, at the Royal conservatoire of the Hague.
He started playing drums at five, as soon as he received his first drum kit. From that moment he followed drum lessons, with various drummers in his native city, Bogotá. His jazz mentor in Colombia was German Sandoval.
He was very curious about the improvisation, and that was one of the reasons why he decided to study jazz. Some of the first jazz drummers he listened to were Jack Dejonethe, Dave Weckl, Mark Guilliana, and Steve Gadd, to mention some.
He became very interested in drummers from older generations such as Philly Joe Jones, Kenny Clarke, Max Roach, Elvin Jones, Roy Haynes.
Both, guitar, and piano, opened him a very particular door towards music and composition, becoming a parallel musical phase of his drum studies.
In his youth he started composing with the guitar, and later he moved to the piano. While studying drums and hearing different jazz musicians, he started to compose with further influenced from this music.
As a very young drummer he performed in different jazz venues at Bogota, with his first trio, with Paulo Simon and Wilson Pepper. He earned a scholarship at Berklee College of Music, but attended to the Royal Conservatoire.
At the conservatory he has received lessons from Eric Ineke, Felix Schlarmann, and Stefan Kruger. He also received a lesson from an the invited teacher, Greg Hutchinson, and assisted to his master class at the conservatory.
He has also assisted to masterclasses from Chris Cheek, Pedro Martins, and Simon Moullier, being able to participate playing on their ensemble lessons. He assisted to a master class of Kyle Poole, to a rehearsal of Emmet Cohen trio, and to a master class of Ari Hoenig and Matt Penman. He has taken piano lessons at the conservatory from Eric Gieben and Bob Wijnen, and studied a minor in jazz piano with Rob van Bavel.
